Before There Was a Name, There Was a Vision
Before Active Sports Therapy had a name, it had a vision.
That vision started with Dr. Jason Hulme, whose career choice was set in motion before he even graduated high school. After sustaining a rib injury during a karate tournament, Jason was frustrated by the limited answers he was given, mainly “just rest and wait it out.” His mom took him to a chiropractor, and the relief was immediate. It was a powerful moment: the first time he realized that healing didn’t have to mean passivity. He knew then he wanted to become a chiropractor, and from that day forward, he never looked back.
Founders Built on Commitment and Sacrifice
Cassie Hulme, co-founder of AST and Jason’s high school sweetheart, was already by his side helping him study anatomy flashcards, supporting his dream, and making sacrifices right alongside him. They moved to St. Louis for Jason to attend Logan University, and while he immersed himself in his studies, Cassie went to work. She held jobs in sales, bookkeeping, and customer service, all while saving to help secure the business loan that would eventually open their clinic doors. During those early years, she was also building a skillset that would become vital to AST’s success.
The Clinic Opens with a Clear Mission
The clinic officially opened in 2009, first under the name Active Spine and Joint Center. From day one, the mission was clear: movement-based, patient-centered care delivered with excellence. AST wasn’t built to be a quick-fix clinic; it was created to help people truly heal, grow stronger, and return to the activities that made them feel most alive.
Early Growth and Clinical Credibility
The early days were humble but driven. Jason brought a high level of clinical skill, eventually earning his Diplomate in Sports Chiropractic (DACBSP) and serving as the Vice President of the Tennessee Board of Chiropractic Examiners. He quickly developed a reputation as a trusted resource in the greater Nashville area, becoming the go-to provider for athletes, youth sports families, and patients looking for thoughtful, evidence-based care. Cassie ran the operations, organized the chaos, and became the heartbeat of the clinic behind the scenes.
Expansion and Family Growth
In 2015, AST moved to its current location at 123 Stadium Drive, a decision that allowed the clinic to expand its services, add new team members, and fully realize its mission. That same year, Cassie and Jason welcomed their first daughter, Amlyn, proving once again that they tend to do “all the things, all at once” when it comes to growth.
Leadership, Advocacy, and Recognition
Over the next decade, AST continued to grow in reputation, in team size, and in impact. In 2019, Cassie became a Certified Chiropractic Clinical Assistant and was appointed to the national CCCA committee through the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards. Over the years that followed, she emerged as a leading advocate for the professional development of chiropractic assistants, mentoring staff and championing a clinic culture where administrative and clinical support roles are treated as essential and respected. That sustained leadership was formally recognized in 2025 when she earned the Chiropractic Assistant of the Year Award from the Tennessee Chiropractic Association, a peer nominated honor acknowledging her impact across the profession.
Leadership Beyond the Clinic Walls
Meanwhile, Dr. Jason has continued to lead from both the treatment floor and the broader chiropractic community. He is now the team chiropractor for Nashville SC and serves on several state and national boards. He has published in Gray Cook’s The Business of Movement, taught as an adjunct faculty member for multiple chiropractic universities, and helped shape the future of chiropractic education and regulation. Through every external role and leadership position, his focus has remained the same: building a clinic where care, standards, and people come first.
Patient Care as the Foundation
At its core, Active Sports Therapy exists to help people heal, move, and return to the lives they value. Delivering high quality, individualized patient care remains the clinic’s primary focus, and every system, training decision, and mentorship pathway exists to support that standard. Continuous education ensures the team is prepared to manage complex cases with consistency, confidence, and accountability.
A Culture of Learning and Professional Development
From that patient centered foundation, AST has intentionally grown into a place of learning. The clinic invests heavily in developing its own staff and culture, then extends that commitment outward by working with high school students, undergraduate programs, chiropractic colleges, and postgraduate institutions. As a privademic site, AST mentors student doctors, hosts preceptors, and supports interns as they prepare to enter the profession, all within an environment that is collaborative, challenging, and grounded in real world clinical excellence.
A Name That Reflected the Reality
In 2024, AST officially changed its name to Active Sports Therapy, a reflection of what the clinic had already become. For 15 years, its systems and services had evolved to meet the needs of active individuals from youth athletes to weekend warriors to patients wanting to return to the lifestyle they love. The new name reflected what had always been true: this clinic doesn’t just treat pain; it helps people move, train, and thrive.
Bishop House and the Next Generation
In 2025, Active Sports Therapy expanded its commitment to student development by launching Bishop House, a housing initiative designed to support chiropractic preceptees who temporarily relocate for clinical training. Bishop House provides affordable, fully furnished housing while serving as a structured extension of the preceptorship experience. Created to reduce financial barriers and support professional readiness, the space allows students to reflect, study, and prepare for the responsibilities of practice outside clinic hours. This program reinforces AST’s belief that investing in the transition from student to doctor strengthens the profession, without compromising the clinic’s primary focus on delivering exceptional patient care.
Who We Are Today
Today, Active Sports Therapy is recognized as a high performance rehab and recovery clinic, one grounded in evidence, driven by values, and rooted in a shared belief that when we move better, we live better.
